Only the pure devotees of the Lord can experience true happiness (ānanda)

Śrī Śrīla Shyām Dās Bābā Mahārāja

(Date 11.08.2026)

Gauḍīya Goṣṭhī Pati Śrī Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda Paramahaṁsa Jagad Guru said that –“The only duty in our life is to do Hari-bhajana and nothing else.”

Each and everyone in this world is running after happiness, but how many of them can really find it? Śrīla Bhakti Prajñāna Keśava Gosvami Mahārāja told that—“You have no idea about the address of absolute maṅgala, whereas you are searching for maṅgala, but be sure that there is no maṅgala at all.”The so called Happiness which is available on the surface of this material world can never satisfy the ātmā in true sense. We are eternal servants of the Lord, but without realizing our sambandha-jñāna with the Lord, we can go on wasting life after life without any reason. That’s why the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam says:

tasyai va hetoḥ prayateta kovido
na labhyate yad bhramatām upary adhaḥ
tad labhyate duḥkhavad anyataḥ sukhaṁ
kālena sarvatra gabhīra-raṁhasā
(SB 1.5.18)

Those who are truly thoughtful and wise should strive only for that supreme purpose — the attainment of the Lord — which cannot be achieved even after wandering through all the worlds, from the highest Brahmaloka down to the lowest Pātāla. Happiness born of sense enjoyment need not be sought, for it comes of its own accord in time, just as suffering also comes uninvited. Therefore, let one’s effort be directed solely toward that rarest goal, which time, karma etc. cannot bestow — loving service unto the Supreme Lord. From Brahmaloka to the lowest region called Patala nobody can be happy in true sense.

From The glorification of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam we know the following sloka–

na cendrasyā sukhaṁ kiñcit na sukhaṁ cakravartinaḥ

sukham asi viraktasya muner kānta jīvinaḥ

“There is no real happiness even for Indra — the king of heaven, or for the emperor of the earth who is enjoying full Sovereignty all over the world. True happiness belongs only to the sādhu who is enjoying complete detachment— the one who’s live is only dedicated to the Lord.”

We usually thinking that the king of heaven must be very happy, but actually it is not at all so. Indra once committed a great offense unto the lotus feet of his Gurudeva Bṛhaspati (devaguru) by not standing up to give honour to his guru. By watching the false ego of disciple Indra he was really annoyed with him and so he took decision to go into invisible stage. Being unable to continue all of his ritualistic activities without guru, finally he took decision to approach Viśvarūpa, who was the son of Tvaṣṭā to accept him as the priest of some yajña. Viśvarūpa, however, secretly started supporting those demons by sharing the offerings to them, which led to a great conflict. Finally Viśvarūpa was beheaded by Indra. This act of killing of a brāhmaṇa can bring brahma-hatyā-pāpa in his life, even though Viśvarūpa was supporting those demons secretly as mother side relative. By doing so Indra was in a very dreadful condition because he was bound to accept the brahma-hatyā-pāpa, whereas on the other side Tvaṣṭā the father of Visvaraupa was so angry that immediately he took decision to take revenge against Indra by opening one fire sacrifice by some very powerful personalities (Brahmanas), but due to mistake done by them in the pronunciation of mantra the result was just opposite of what he wanted to do. He wanted to get a powerful demon to come out of the fire sacrifice who can kill Indra, but due to that mistake in pronunciation of mantra just the opposite of what he wanted to do happened, I mean Vṛtrāsura appeared from the fire sacrifice who was finally killed by Indra. He was bound to take refuge in the stem of a lotus flower growing in Mānasa-sarovara, because Lakṣmī-devī staying there, to avoid the reaction supposed to come for the brahma-hatyā-pāpa already done by him by killing Vṛtrāsura who was brāhmaṇa origin, and finally all those big big muni-ṛṣis they wanted to find some way out to make Indra Mahārāja free of brahma-hatyā-pāpa, so by distributing the brahma-hatyā-pāpa among earth, water, trees, and women respectively to neutralize the reaction which was supposed to come to contaminate Indra Mahārāja. During that time, when the seat of Indra Mahārāja was vacant then for the time being Nahuṣa Mahārāja was given the chance to rule the heaven, but he also due to his unjustified demand on the wife of Indra Mahārāja received a big reaction like curse given by those brahma-ṛṣis to fall down on the earth from the heaven as a python snake.

avaśyam eva bhoktavyaṁ kṛta karma śubhāśubham

nābhuktaṁ kṣīyate karma kalpa-koṭi-śatair api (Nārada Purāṇa)

“One must experience the results of the actions one has performed, whether auspicious or inauspicious. Karma does not perish without being suffered, even after hundreds of millions of kalpas.”

So the result of karmic reaction can never make you free from bondage, so the only solution is to do Hari-bhajana from heart without any duplicity.
