Bhakti Sambandha Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja

On Tuesday, 26th December 1893 (Bengali Calendar: 12 Poush 1300, Krishna-chaturthi – fourth day of the waning moon cycle), an exalted personality appeared in the home of Janardan Das (father) and Saraswati Devi (mother) in the village of Patna, Narail, Jessore, Bangladesh. Seeing the baby boy’s beautiful form, his parents named him Bhuvanmohan (he who enchants the entire world). Janardan Das used to work as a manager in a private firm. Bhuvanmohan used to study at Khulna, Bangladesh.

His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupada used to go to Khulna almost every week for the purpose of preaching the divine message of Lord Caitanya. During one of Srila Prabhupada’s visits to Khulna, Bhuvanmohan had the opportunity to see him. After some time, out of eagerness, Bhuvanmohan went to Bag Bazar Gaudiya Math, Kolkata and personally met with Srila Prabhupada. After meeting Srila Prabhupada, Bhuvanmohan went back to his home. However, his parents wanted to keep Bhuvanmohan at home as a householder and tried to arrange his wedding. Bhuvanmohan was not interested in getting married; he wanted to lead a renounced life. Soon after, Bhuvanmohan’s attraction to Srila Prabhupada urged him to leave home and take initiation from Srila Prabhupada at Caitanya Math, Mayapur, Nadia.

At the time of initiation, Srila Prabhupada gave Bhuvanmohan the new name, Bhuvaneshwar Das Brahmachari. After the initiation ceremony, Janardan Das came to Caitanya Math and said, “This Bhuvanmohan is the only breadwinner of the family. All of my other sons do not earn money. Please send Bhuvanmohan back home.” Srila Prabhupada replied, “He has come here to do hari-bhajana. How can I send him back? Better if you send your other sons to me so that they can do their studies here.” Janardan Das went back home and sent his youngest son, Jamini Das, to Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada helped Jamini study until the completion of his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. Gradually, Bhuvaneshwar Brahmachari studied all of the spiritual scriptures of devotion with sincerity and followed in the footsteps of Srila Prabhupada with love from the bottom of his heart.

On Friday, 2nd March 1934 (Bengali calendar: 18 Phalgun 1340, Gaura Purnima) at Srila Gaurakishore Das Babaji Maharaja’s samadhi temple located at Caitanya Math, Mayapur, Srila Prabhupada gave Bhuvaneshwar Das Brahmachari sannyasa; Bhuvaneshwar Brahmachari’s new name became Bhakti Sambandha Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja. Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja wrote many poems and articles. Srila Prabhupada appointed Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja to become temple president of the Gaudiya Math branch located in Delhi. Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja was properly running the Delhi branch.

After three years, on Friday 1st January 1937 (Bengali calendar: 16 Poush 1343 Krishna-chaturthi) at 5:30 AM, Srila Prabhupada physically passed away from this world. After hearing this distressful news, Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja went to Caitanya Math to see Srila Prabhupada’s samadhi. Out of separation, Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja decided to go and perform solitary devotional practice. Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja went to Bordia, Jessore, Bangladesh and established a temple, Sri Sri Gaura Saraswat Gaudiya Math, with the help of local devotees; there, he installed the deities of Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Gandharvika Giridhari. Due to Maharaja’s attractive personality, many people were drawn to take shelter of him.

On 22nd November 1978 (Bengali calendar: 6 Agrahayan 1385, Krishna-saptami) during the early morning hours (Brahma-muhurta), Srila Turyashrami Goswami Maharaja left the material world while chanting the holy names and went back to the spiritual abode to join the eternal service of the Divine Couple, Sri Sri Radha Krishna.
